SUCCESSES/GOOD NEWS

NEW ITEMS REQUIRING ACTION in no particular order – there are a lot, but that’s because I know that people are interested in different things. Pick the issue that you’re most concerned about, and take action.

1 “House Intelligence Committee Chair Devin Nunes has consistently demonstrated an unwillingness to seriously investigate allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 election cycle. He has dismissed evidence of Russian election tampering and attempted to redirect attention to “leaks,” such as the revelation that ex-National Security Advisor Michael Flynn had lied about his past contacts with Russian officials. Most recently, at a press conference on Wednesday, March 22, Nunes announced that Trump transition team communications may have been collected as part of US intelligence agencies’ routine monitoring of foreign officials. In other words, Trump’s team was communicating with people who were of interest to the US intelligence community. Nunes did not notify House Intelligence Committee minority leader Adam Schiff of his discovery, but instead immediately informed House Speaker Paul Ryan and promised to brief President Trump. Nunes leads the committee charged with investigating purported Russian interference in our government, yet his actions indicate he cannot carry out this responsibility impartially. His willingness to brief the very administration that his committee is supposed to be investigating without fully informing his fellow committee members further demonstrates that Nunes cannot oversee this investigation. The FBI has now formally confirmed that they are investigating the Trump administration’s connections to Russia; there is no room for partisanship when protecting the integrity and independence of our elections. Devin Nunes must recuse himself from all future investigations of the Trump-Russia connection.” From https://5calls.org for an article on the subject see https://thinkprogress.org/nunes-trump-surveillance-obama-f170ad83e0e2#.wzd41b1ju

2 A previous newsletter mentioned concerns that 45 was encouraging the US military to push civilian casualties. Several recent news reports support this fear. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/mar/24/mosuls-children-were-shouting-under-the-rubble-nobody-came?CMP=share_btn_tw and https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/24/world/middleeast/us-iraq-mosul-investigation-airstrike-civilian-deaths.html?_r=0 and https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/checkpoint/wp/2017/03/24/airstrike-monitoring-group-overwhelmed-by-claims-of-u-s-caused-civilian-casualties/?tid=ss_tw&utm_term=.65491cd415ed

    • US Senator Sanders Local office 802-862-0697 https://www.sanders.senate.gov/contact/comment
    • US House Representative Peter Welch 802-652-2450 https://welch.house.gov/contact/email
    • Script: I am one of the Congressman’s constituents in Vermont. I am very concerned about the massive civilian casualties in US strikes in Yemen and Mosul, and evidence that Trump has been encouraging the military to push number of civilian casualties. Not only is this skirting a human rights violation, but it’s putting US troops at risk by forfeiting our right to expect opponents to follow the rules of engagement when dealing with us. I would like the Congressman to looking into the military’s conduct towards civilians and Trump’s instructions to the military on this matter. Thank you.

3. 45 has reversed his position regarding his so-called efforts to avoid a conflict of interests, and will now be copied on financial reports from Trump Organization. In combination with recent stories about Jared Kushner benefiting from a 400 million deal with China, and Trump Organization’s receipt of new Chinese and Mexican trademarks, this demonstrates a pattern of corruption. http://www.cnbc.com/2017/03/24/trump-actually-will-be-involved-in-trump-organization.html and http://www.vox.com/world/2017/3/15/14921720/kushner-conflict-interest-anbang and http://bigstory.ap.org/article/cef40d0189294ae3923ec301cfdf662e/mexico-oks-trump-trademarks-hotels-and-tourism-industry and https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/08/business/china-trademark-donald-trump.html

    • House Representative Peter Welch 802-652-2450 https://welch.house.gov/contact/email
    • Script: I am a constituent of the Congressman in Vermont and I am concerned about reports that Trump is reversing his decision to cut ties with his businesses. He will now be copied on financial reports from Trump Organization. Coupled with reports of new trademarks in China and Mexico, this reflects a pattern of corruption. I would like the Congressman to investigate this conflict of interest. Thank you.

4 It costs so much money to provide protection for the Trumps’ elaborate lifestyle that cuts are expected in other essential services, such as cybersecurity and the investigation of cases involving missing and exploited children. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/secret-service-asked-for-60-million-extra-for-trump-era-travel-and-protection-documents-show/2017/03/22/0967e7b6-0a85-11e7-a15f-a58d4a988474_story.html?utm_term=.0ef5ee084fa8

    • House Representative Peter Welch 802-652-2450 https://welch.house.gov/contact/email
    • Script: I am a constituent of the Congressman in Vermont and I am gravely concerned about reports that cuts will be required to cybersecurity and the investigation of cases involving missing and exploited children in order to pay for the Secret Services’ efforts to protect the Trumps as they pursue their elaborate lifestyle. This is an unacceptable cost to the people not only in terms of our tax dollars but also our security. I would like the Congressman to denounce the Trumps’ abuse of our resources. Thank you.

5 S.718 has been introduced in the Senate to “to amend the Higher Education Act of 1965 to make college affordable and accessible, also known as the Making Education Affordable and Accessible Act. This legislation would support dual enrollment so that high school students can earn college credit, but without the financial” cost: https://www.franken.senate.gov/?p=press_release&&id=3650 (from http://roganslist.blogspot.com/) https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/senate-bill/718?r=5

7 A previous newsletter asked you to call your senator to ask him vote against legislation that would allow your private information to be sold by internet service providers without obtaining your permission. https://www.aclu.org/blog/washington-markup/senate-just-sold-out-your-privacy-online-corporations-comcast and https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/senate-joint-resolution/34 Similar legislation has been introduced into the House (hasn’t gone through the Senate yet) https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/house-joint-resolution/86/committees and https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2017/03/congress-debates-reversing-course-decades-consumer-privacy-protections

  • Action: Contact your Representative (for me this is Peter Welch 802-652-2450 or https://welch.house.gov/contact/email) Script: I’m one of the Congressman’s constituents in Vermont. I would like the senator to vote against HJRes86 and SJRes 34. This legislation would overturn a Federal Communications Commission rule that requires internet service providers to get customers’ permission before they sell sensitive consumer data. It’s important to me that the Congressman demonstrate his commitment to protecting my privacy by voting against HJRES 86 and SJRes 34, which has already made it through the Senate.

10 The US opted out of a March 21 meeting of “a regional human rights body that has enjoyed the support of every U.S. administration since its founding. THINGS TO KEEP AN EYE ON

45 has promised to let the ACA (Obamacare) fail http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/325766-trump-tweets-well-put-together-a-great-plan-after-obamacare-explodes

“Sens. Tom Udall (N.M.), Sheldon Whitehouse (R.I.), Tom Carper (Del.) and Jack Reed (R.I.) on Friday introduced the the Make Access Records Available to Lead American Government Openness Act — or MAR-A-LAGO Act. The legislation would require the Trump administration to publish public visitor logs for the White House “or any other location where President Trump regularly conducts official business.” Rep. Mike Quigley (D-Ill.) is also introducing a House version of the legislation.” http://thehill.com/blogs/floor-action/senate/325651-dems-introduce-bill-to-publish-mar-a-lago-white-house-visitor-logs
